COFFEE BREAK

Logline:

A struggling café owner, Angela Maine, is the opposite of what one would call “business-savvy.” To save the establishment that is her late father’s legacy, she agrees to an arranged marriage with the spoiled, calculating billionaire Andrew Lewis, who allegedly stumbles into her rundown coffee shop. It’s just business to both of them, for Angela needs the investment her fake hubby-to-be promises, and Andrew needs a wife to secure his inheritance. Stepping into the ruthless world of the wealthy and elite, Angela uncovers dark secrets that tie her past to the all-powerful Lewis dynasty. With the formidable matriarch of the family determined to break her grandson’s fake marriage, a dangerous rival digging into her history, and Andrew’s enigmatic brother proving far too tempting, Angela must thrive in a treacherous game of deception, survival, and unexpected desire. Will she outplay them all, or will she lose everything, including her heart?

Synopsys:

Angela Maine has always been more of a dreamer and less of a calculator, which makes her the worst but only person left on earth to run Café Maine, the last remnant of her late father’s legacy. Having too much spirit but lacking a knack for business turns her new path in life into a waking nightmare. With debt piling up and business dwindling, just when all hope seems lost, fate delivers an unexpected customer in a bit of a hurry: Andrew Lewis, a spoiled billionaire who never steps into places like hers, until now. Calculating and pragmatic, Andrew has one problem money alone cannot solve: his inheritance is locked behind one condition, he must be married.

Angela scoffs at the absurdity when he first proposes an arranged marriage, calling it a sham at first sight. Yet, Angela is not above faking it till she makes it. With nowhere else to turn, she reluctantly agrees. The terms are simple: one year of marriage in exchange for an investment that will save her finances. No romance, no complications, just a business deal. Unfortunately for Angela, stepping into Andrew’s world proves more perilous than she had ever imagined, for the Lewis family is a dynasty built on power and secrecy, and not everyone welcomes her with open arms.

Angela’s biggest trial on the path to this marriage is Lorelei Lewis, the formidable matriarch who is determined to crush her grandson’s sham of a marriage for one reason or another. As spoiled as her grandchildren but tenfold ruthless, Lorelei allies herself with Daniela Caldwell, the orphaned daughter of a rival family to whom she promised Andrew’s hand in marriage for a corporate merger. The duo stops at nothing to expose Angela, machinating, humiliating social traps. Meanwhile, Andrew’s charismatic and enigmatic brother Raymond takes an unexpected interest in Angela. Raymond’s flirtatious behaviors test her resolve and will, and his whispers hint at a secret that ties her family’s past to the Lewis empire.

Struggling to maintain the perfect wife-to-be facade, Angela goes through Lorelei’s personal belongings in secret and unearths a shocking letter sent by her own father just a week before the car accident that caused his untimely death. In the note, he threatens Lorelei with “telling the press everything” because he “has nothing left to lose.” Angela gets no answers when she confronts Andrew about the letter, but later, Raymond reveals a truth that shatters her world: her father used to be a hitman for the Lewis family, eliminating their competitors. The dramatic confrontation leads to a night of passion in a hotel room, which leaves Angela wracked with guilt.

As the wedding day draws near, she slowly realizes that beneath his calculating presence, Andrew is a good man who has never known love beyond power and control. Their cold arrangement begins to ignite something real, until Daniela Caldwell, armed with photos of Angela and Raymond, brings trouble. Daniela’s discoveries go even deeper when she learns that Angela’s father used to carry out assassinations under Lorelei’s orders, and their victims included her own parents.

Lorelei makes her move on the wedding day by exposing the sham that is her grandson's marriage and leaving Angela to face the wolves of high society. In a moment that defies everything he once believed, Andrew chooses Angela over his inheritance, proving their love is no longer a lie. Just when it seems the battle is won, Daniela arrives with a gun. Seeking justice for her parents, she murders Lorelei.

In the end, Angela and Andrew wed in a humble ceremony, surrounded by close friends. Raymond inherits everything, only to watch the company crumble under endless lawsuits. With her business-savvy husband by her side, Angela’s Café Maine thrives. And in Andrew’s arms, she finds something far greater than wealth: a love neither of them expected, but both are willing to fight for.

Screenplay:

Episode 1: (Angela struggles to keep Café Maine afloat as debt looms and customers leave. Andrew Lewis storms in, demanding coffee in a hurry.)

CAFé MAINE - DAY

Angela stands behind the display window of her small coffee shop, watching people pass by with an inviting smile. Her hair is a bit messy.

ANGELA

(Sarcastic.)

Just another girls' night out with me, myself, and I in Café Maine. And it’s not even nighttime yet.

She waves at a married couple with a toddler son passing by.

ANGELA

Hi!

The couple turns their eyes away, whereas the toddler waves back at her.

Child

Hi!

The child’s mother takes him to her lap, and they leave.

Angela flips them off and turns her back. She is all alone in the café, no customers. The café is rundown and unappealing. The light is very dim.

ANGELA

(Sarcastically.)

You don't want my coffee? Fine! I don't want your money either!

She walks to the counter.

ANGELA

(Sarcastically.)

Not that I don't need it, but... That's beside the point!

Angela reaches for the teabag box on the counter. She pauses for a second as a pile of unpaid bills near the box catches her attention.

ANGELA

(Grunts, looking at the bills.)

Oh, don't you give me that face! I'll pay. It's on my to-do list.

She takes a teabag from the box.

ANGELA

The hell am I doing? I don’t even like tea!

She looks at her father’s picture on the counter and lifts the teabag.

ANGELA

Sorry Dad. I know jasmine was your favorite, but I just can’t stand the smell.

She takes the picture and sighs, putting the teabag on the counter.

ANGELA

Wish you were still here to pick up the business before I fuck it up beyond repair.

Tire screeches distract and frighten Angela as a limousine suddenly makes a stop in front of the café.

Andrew, a posh, handsome, yet annoyed businessman, hops out and barges into the café, talking on the phone.

ANDREW

Yeah, right! Why don't you marry your cousin if you’re into that kinda stuff? Perv!

Episode 2: (Angela overhears Andrew’s call about needing a wife for his inheritance. She jokes about marriage, but Andrew is dead serious.)

CAFé MAINE - DAY

Angela smiles at the handsome man. She puts the picture back on the counter, next to the teabag.

ANGELA

(Fixing her hair.)

Hello!

ANDREW

No, dude, I’m not putting my neck on the line, okay?

ANGELA

What can I get you?

ANDREW

I told you, I’m not gonna bang your cousin. What do you mean "why"? Have you seen her?

Angela stares at him in expectation.

ANGELA

Sir?

ANDREW

(Looks at Angela for a mere second.)

Yeah yeah yeah! Umm, coffee, black.

ANGELA

Size?

ANDREW

Largo, grande, a la carte, I don’t give a shit! Just pour something in one of those friggin' cups!

Angela turns her back to take the coffee pot, mocking Andrew silently.

ANDREW

No, I was talking to the barista chick. Look, I’ve already told everyone who is anyone. I’m not getting married. Not for grandma’s inheritance. Not for the private island near Mallorca. Not for a seat in the space shuttle bound to leave Earth before that fucking meteor gets any closer!

ANGELA

(Baffled.)

Meteor?

ANDREW

Not for nothing! Got it? Goodbye!

Angela shakes her head to pull herself together, clears her throat, and forces an awkward smile

.

ANGELA

You know double negatives make a positive, right?

Andrew smirks. Angela hands him a cup of coffee as he puts his phone in his pocket.

ANGELA

(Playing with her hair, smiling.)

Trouble in paradise? Seriously, I mean, Mallorca does sound like paradise. Never been though, so I wouldn’t know.

Andrew stares at Angela for a second or two, examining her, looking her up and down. Angela feels tense.

ANGELA

You alright?

ANDREW

Yeah yeah yeah! I just --

Andrew sighs.

ANDREW

I needed an excuse to jump out of that limo for some alone time.

ANGELA

Alone, eh? You're lucky Café Maine is the best place for that, sadly for me.

Angela looks around the empty café and sighs.

ANGELA

I hear the back alley is pretty secluded too, unless you’re looking for some man-on-man action. Just try not to step on a condom.

ANDREW

Not in the mood for jokes. I stopped the car, saw your face, thought you were hot, and came in to . . . make a proposal.

Angela cackles.

ANGELA

You almost sound like you’re about to ask me to marry you.

Andrew looks dead serious.

Episode 3: (Andrew proposes an arranged marriage. Angela laughs in disbelief but later finds an eviction notice on her café door.)

CAFé MAINE - DAY

ANGELA

(Laughs and waves him away.)

Dude, come back when you’re done tripping.

Andrew sighs.

ANDREW

Here’s the deal. I need a wife ASAP to secure my grandma’s inheritance and get her blood-sucking porcelain fangs off my back. I tie the knot, pretend to be in love for a year or so, the paperwork gets done, I get the money, you get an agreeably small portion of it, and we go our separate ways.

ANGELA

(Grimaces.)

God, you are serious.

ANDREW

Dead serious.

ANGELA

But you just told that guy on the phone you weren’t in the market for that shit.

ANDREW

I’m not in the market for the shit they personally pick for me. Not Pamela, not Esme, and definitely not Daniela.

ANGELA

(Squints and sarcastically shakes her head.)

Yeah, don’t you just hate those bitches?

ANDREW

You have no idea. If I put a ring on any of those future hags some family member brings into the picture, the tie will stay knotted forever. There’ll be no escape --

ANGELA

(Suspicious.)

Riiight!

ANDREW

But if I go for a penny-pinching, out-at-the-heels minimal wager like you, they’ll get off my back in a snap when I tell them we’re no longer an item.

ANGELA

God, you are seriously serious.

ANDREW

Let’s not repeat that part.

ANGELA

Dude, like, why me then? There are thousands of penny-pinching, out-at-the-heels minimal wagers like me on the streets. Not saying they’re hotter, but . . . You know!

ANDREW

Well --

Andrew taps his fingers on the counter and thinks for a second.

ANDREW

The limo stopped in front of your shop.

ANGELA

(Shakes her head in disagreement.)

U-uh! There’s got to be more to it.

ANDREW

Maybe, but you won’t know until you take a chance.

Andrew rolls his eyes.

ANDREW

Just say you won the lottery and let it go, okay? You obviously need the money.

ANDREW

(Looks around.)

This place can use a makeover.

He leaves his business card on the counter, next to the coffee.

ANGELA

Aren’t you gonna drink your coffee?

ANDREW

Can’t! Too little time, very small bladder!

ANGELA

(Whispers.)

Didn’t need to hear that.

Andrew leaves a hundred bucks on the counter.

ANDREW

Keep the change, and drink the coffee in my stead. You don’t look like a tea person. No offense.

Andrew points at the teabag on the counter. Angela looks at her father’s picture, which is right next to the teabag.

ANGELA

(Sighing.)

None taken.

Andrew walks to the door.

ANGELA

Hey, I don’t even know your name.

ANDREW

Andrew!

ANGELA

(Plays with her hair again, smiling.)

I’m Angela!

ANDREW

Yeah, cool!

Andrew takes a deep breath, waves her goodbye, and gets out. Angela walks to the door to watch him go, still smiling and playing with her hair.

She then notices a piece of paper fixed to the door on the outside, takes it, and loses the smile. It reads, “Eviction Notice.”
